Atlas of the Heart™

Diving into emotions & experiences that define what it means to be human.

Language is our portal.

In Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown defines and differentiates the meanings of 87 different emotions and experiences (thoughts that lead to emotion) grouping them together based on how they relate and compare to one another. Throughout my adult life, I’ve often wanted to learn a second language thinking, of course, that it would be something like Spanish or Japanese. It turns out the language I’m most passionate and curious to learn is that of Emotions. Join me in the discussion group I’m creating to dive into this material and learn more about the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. Yes, yes, you can read the book and sort through it alone. However, there is a sweetness that happens when curious, like-hearted humans form common-unity and travel together.

Language is our portal to meaning-making, connection, healing, learning, and self-awareness. Having access to the right words can open up entire universes. When we don’t have the language to talk about what we’re experiencing, our ability to make sense of what’s happening and share it with others is severely limited. Without accurate language, we struggle to get the help we need, we don’t always regulate or manage our emotions and experiences in such a way that allows us to move through them productively, and our self-awareness is diminished. Language shows us that naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding and meaning.” – Brené Brown

The Atlas of the Heart group meets over the course of twelve months. The meeting dates are spread-out for the purpose of deepening your understanding and felt sense of the various emotions.
